Check the snare beyond the monitor

Find out where the unwanted sound is happening before reaching for a tension rod.

If the snare sounds harsh or dull through your monitor, ask whether the same problem is audible out front. The monitor and audience mixes can differ, so the sound at the throne is only one part of the check.

During soundcheck, play a few ordinary backbeats while the engineer listens. Ask for a specific description: too much ring, too loud, or too little definition? Then hear the acoustic drum without its monitor channel, if that can be done comfortably.

If the acoustic drum sounds wrong too, check its tuning and condition. If the problem appears only in the monitor, work with the engineer on that mix before retuning. A rehearsal recording from the audience area can offer another perspective, although a phone recording does not reproduce the room’s sound exactly.
