Trying rods without changing the whole part
Keep the groove familiar while you try a different implement.
Rods offer another sound to try when ordinary sticks make a passage difficult to balance. Bring them to rehearsal if you already have them, and compare the same short groove with each pair. Keep the tempo and intended dynamics similar.
Listen to the snare definition and cymbal sound, and ask how the passage carries in the room. Some rod designs produce a lighter sound than regular sticks, but they still require controlled playing. Check whether you can play the important accents comfortably rather than compensating with harder strokes.
The arrangement, room, and amplification all affect which implement fits. Choose the version that balances with the band, and rehearse the switch if you plan to change between songs. Keep the rods where you can reach them during the break, then check the first backbeat after the change.
