One open hi-hat into the chorus

Give the closing of the hi-hat as much practice as the opening.

A brief open hi-hat can mark an entrance when a crash feels too strong for the arrangement. Try it as an option at rehearsal, and check that the band still hears the change clearly.

For a 4/4 practice example, play a closed hi-hat on “1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &,” with kick on 1 and 3 and snare on 2 and 4. On beat 4 of the last verse bar, ease the hi-hat foot up so that hit rings. Close the cymbals on the next 1 and continue the groove.

Loop those two bars. Listen for the kick and the closing hi-hat arriving together, followed by evenly spaced eighth notes. If the return is awkward, slow down and practice the foot movement with the kick before adding the whole groove. Use another entrance if this one does not fit the song.
