A setup you can find again
Once a layout works, record enough detail to rebuild it.
At the end of a comfortable rehearsal, take a photo of the kit from the playing position and another from the side. Note the throne setting, snare height, and any stand settings you regularly change. These references help when a shared kit has been moved.
Before saving the layout, play the groove and a short fill you actually use. Check that you can reach the cymbals without stretching and return from the floor tom without twisting awkwardly. Move anything that makes those transitions uncomfortable, then take the photos.
Place the chart where you can glance at it and see the leader. Conventional layouts are a starting point; your handedness, reach, and playing approach may call for something different. Keep the useful settings, and adjust them when the kit or your needs change.
