Checking the chorus against the click
The first chorus bar can show whether the change in your part also changed your timing.
Choose a verse-to-chorus transition in a song that keeps the same tempo. Set the metronome to the band’s agreed tempo.
Play two verse bars and two chorus bars, using the parts you intend to play with the band. Record the whole sequence. Listen first to the kick on the chorus downbeat, then to the spacing of the hi-hat notes in the following bar. An entrance can arrive on time while the rest of the bar still speeds up.
If the chorus moves ahead of the click, repeat the change with a simpler cymbal part. Once that stays even, bring back the original change and compare. The aim is to locate the movement that unsettles the pulse so you can practice it directly.
