If the hi-hat stand moves

Have an alternative cymbal part ready before you need it.

If the hi-hat stand shifts and the pedal is no longer comfortably reachable, avoid chasing it with your foot while playing. If it is safe to continue, move the time pattern to the ride or another reachable cymbal and keep the kick and snare part simple.

Between songs, check the stand’s legs, floor contact, and fasteners according to its instructions. A stand can move for more than one reason; tightening a random screw is not a complete diagnosis. If anything is unstable or could fall, stop and make it safe before continuing.

At rehearsal, try one verse on the ride so the alternative feels familiar. Listen to its volume and change your touch if needed. You do not need to reproduce every hi-hat opening while the stand is out of reach; follow the form and the band’s cues.
