When eighth-note hi-hats fit better

Simplifying the hi-hat is an option to test, not an automatic correction to a recording.

If a sixteenth-note hi-hat part feels crowded or difficult to control, try eighth notes over the same kick and snare pattern. In 4/4, count the sixteenths as “1 e & a” for each beat; the eighth-note version keeps the numbers and “&” counts.

Record both versions with the song or band. Listen for what changes: the lighter part might leave useful space, or it might remove the rhythmic motion the arrangement needs. Keep the tempo and intended volume similar so the comparison is meaningful.

If you want the sixteenths but cannot play them evenly yet, practice a short passage at a slower tempo and gradually return to the song’s speed. Check both versions with the band and choose the one that supplies the motion the arrangement needs.
