When the chorus feels faster

A busier chorus can feel more energetic while keeping the same pulse.

Listen to the verse and chorus of the band’s reference recording without playing. Tap the underlying beat through the transition. Notice whether the tempo changes or whether additional instruments and a more active rhythm create the lift.

If the tempo stays steady, practice your transition with the same click throughout. Then listen to a rehearsal recording with the band. A new cymbal texture or fill may make the entrance feel faster even when the pulse holds; tapping through several bars helps you separate those questions.

If the arrangement really changes tempo, agree on how the band will make that change. You may need a new count-in, a cue, or a programmed click transition. Write it on the chart. Keeping one tempo is a sensible starting point for many songs, but the actual arrangement is the authority.
