Keep your touch consistent as the song builds

Check whether your touch follows the planned dynamics as the band’s energy rises.

Choose a chorus that the band intends to repeat at the same dynamic level. Record it early in rehearsal and again after a full song run. Listen for whether the hi-hat, snare accents, and fills have grown louder even though the arrangement stayed the same.

If your touch changes, isolate a short phrase from that chorus. Play it at the agreed tempo and practice the intended contrast between accents and quieter notes. Then approach it from the verse, where the change in the band’s energy may make you play differently.

Ask the leader which version fits the chorus. An arranged crescendo should still grow; the comparison helps you notice an unintended increase and decide where to control it. Keep the recording position and levels consistent when possible, and use what you hear as a comparison rather than an exact loudness measurement.
