Ask for useful volume feedback
Ask where and when the drums become difficult to hear around.
“The drums are too much” leaves several possible problems unresolved. Ask which passage was difficult and what became hard to hear. A cymbal covering the vocal calls for a different experiment from a kick that overwhelms the bass.
Repeat that passage at rehearsal and change one thing. If the cymbals are the concern, try a quieter closed hi-hat or remove an optional crash. If the whole kit is loud, try a softer touch while keeping the same part. Ask for feedback from the same listening position after the change.
Write the useful result on the chart: “quiet hat in first verse” gives you something to repeat. Avoid buying equipment from a vague complaint. If the playing adjustment does not solve it, work with the engineer to identify what remains and where it is heard.
