Devoted Drummer

Can you still hear the backbeat?

Ghost notes should add detail without accidentally becoming competing accents.

Record a short groove twice: once with the ghost notes you plan to use, then without them. Keep the backbeat and cymbal part consistent. Listen to whether the extra snare taps add useful motion or distract from the main accents.

Ghost notes are deliberately quiet notes. Start the stick nearer the head for those taps than for the accented notes, then adjust by listening. A fixed inch measurement cannot guarantee the right volume on every drum. Practice a troublesome ghost note with the backbeat that follows it so you can hear the contrast.

A phone recording can help you compare takes, although its automatic level changes may exaggerate or flatten that contrast. Check with the band too. If the taps make the passage harder to play or balance, leave them out while you work on their control.
